Why Amantea is Your Base for Calabria

Amantea sits midway along Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast — far enough from the tourist circuit to feel genuinely Italian, close enough to everything that matters. Tropea, the Sila plateau, the hilltop villages of the interior, and the Aspromonte are all within a comfortable day's drive.

The town sits directly on the SS18 — the historic coastal road that links the entire Tyrrhenian seaboard from Reggio to Naples. Driving north or south from Amantea puts you on the A2 or A3 motorway within minutes, making almost every corner of Calabria reachable without backtracking.

Prefer not to drive? Amantea has its own train station on the Battipaglia–Reggio Calabria coastal line, with connections north to Naples and south to Tropea, Pizzo, and Reggio Calabria. For the airport, Trenitalia's Lamezia Airlink combines your train ticket with an onward shuttle bus (€1.50 add-on) that runs every 30 minutes and drops you 50 metres from the arrivals exit — making the full journey from Amantea entirely car-free. Check current timetables on Trenitalia.com before you travel. Most visitors to southern Italy see only a sliver — staying here means you see all of it.

The Destination

Amantea, Calabria —
Italy's Best-Kept Secret

Amantea sits on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria — a medieval clifftop town that has never chased the tourist trail. Its centro storico is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, arched passages, and stone buildings layered over two thousand years of history.

Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Norman — every civilization that mattered in the Mediterranean left something here. What remains is an Italy that feels real, not packaged.

"There's an edge of discovery to it — a sense that you've stumbled onto something real instead of something polished and packaged."

3,000 Years of History

Greek foundations, Norman towers, Byzantine frescoes. Amantea's streets are a living museum you'll explore without the crowds.

Legendary Calabrian Food

Tropea red onions, 'nduja, fresh-caught Tyrrhenian fish, homemade pasta. Calabrian cuisine evolved in isolation — and what emerged is entirely its own.
